For the 2020 hardware launch the Google Retail cross-functional team developed a fresh system of visuals to attract shoppers within retail environments in-store and online. The previous year’s design system featured a tiled, Bauhaus-inspired layout (right), which proved to be challenging to adapt to many international third-party retailers with smaller graphics.

Through research and ideation we discovered that we needed to build from a clean white slate, incorporate the four iconic Google colors to build brand awareness within third-party retail, highlight product design, and also show supporting services such as the Google Assistant and the new 5G network capabilities for Pixel phones.

With many different fixture sizes and online placements, we needed to create a variety of ratios to build out a toolkit that could then be altered by regional teams.

In addition to Pixel 5, we launched five other products with solo graphics and included one combination graphic for both phones when needed.
